WHAT IS BISCOFF?

Before we begin, let’s talk about Biscoff cookies generally. Biscoff is a super tasty (somewhat addictive) cookie that has swept the world in the past couple of years. Lotus is the company that makes Biscoff cookies.

The first Biscoff cookie was actually made back in 1932 by a Belgian baker named Jan Boone Sr. The cookie had that distinctive caramelized flavor, and thus, Biscoff was born!

Biscoff cookies pair great with coffee and espresso making it a popular option for cafes and coffee shops around the world.

IS BISCOFF VEGAN?

To all my vegans out there- you’re in luck!

Original Biscoff Cookies and the Biscoff cookie butter are in fact vegan. They’re free from eggs, milk, and animal by-products (including those pesky ‘traces of’ ingredients).

However, not ALL of Lotus’ products are vegan friendly. Below I break down exactly which Lotus products are vegan and which ones aren’t.

is biscoff spread vegan?

VEGAN BISCOFF PRODUCTS

Here are a few of the products which are vegan friendly.

1. original Lotus Biscoff cookies

The original Lotus cookies ARE vegan. Unlike some of the cookies listed below, the original cookie has no allergen warnings other than soy & gluten. Below are the ingredients and a few notes about what’s in them:

biscoff cookie ingredients

Wheat flour, sugar, vegetable oils (contains one or more of soybean oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, palm oil), brown sugar syrup, sodium bicarbonate (leavening), soy flour, salt, cinnamon.

ingredient notes:
  • Biscoff cookies do contain sugar. Usually, processed sugar is filtered with bone char. However they’ve stated on their website that they do not contain any animal products, so we’re assuming they are using vegan-friendly sugar.

2. lotus Biscoff vanilla sandwich cookies

Second on this list are the vanilla sandwich cookies. The cream sandwiches are actually a pretty new addition to Lotus’ cookie lineup. They recently came out with a variety of flavors for their sandwich cookies, but only 2 of them are vegan.

The Biscoff vanilla sandwich cookies are vegan. However, because they’re manufactured on the same line as the chocolate cream sandwiches, they contain traces of egg and milk.

Similar to Oreos, the cream filling is made from vegetable oils and flavoring.

Vanilla sandwich cookie ingredients

Sugar, Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oils (Contains one or more of Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil, Canola Oil, Palm Oil), Brown Sugar Syrup, Sodium Bicarbonate (Leavening), Soy Flour, Soy Lecithin (Emulsifier), Salt, Cinnamon, Natural Flavor.

ingredient notes:
  • The Vanilla sandwich cookies aren’t completely allergen-friendly because they contain traces of milk and eggs. This means they are most likely manufactured on the same line as products that have milk in the ingredients.
  • On Lotus’ website, they state: “The allergen is not present in the recipe of this product but is present in the company where this product is made.”

3. Biscoff cream sandwich cookies

Next up are the new Biscoff cream cookies. The Biscoff cream sandwich cookies ARE vegan. But, similar to the vanilla version, they’re manufactured on the same line as the chocolate cream sandwiches.

Because of this, they have an allergen warning saying they contain traces of egg and milk. Below are the ingredients and a few notes about what’s in them.

Biscoff cream sandwich cookie ingredients

Wheat Flour, Sugar, Vegetable Oils (Contains One or More of Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil, Canola Oil, Palm Oil), Brown Sugar Syrup, Sodium Bicarbonate (Leavening), Soy Flour, Salt, Cinnamon, Soy Lecithin (Emulsifier).

ingredient notes:
  • The Biscoff cream sandwich cookies aren’t completely allergen-friendly because they contain traces of milk and eggs.
  • On Lotus’ website, they state: “The allergen is not present in the recipe of this product but is present in the company where this product is made.”

4. creamy and crunchy Biscoff cookie butter

Both the creamy and crunchy cookie butters are vegan. Primarily, they are made of oil, sugar, and wheat.

biscoff cookie butter ingredients

Biscoff cookies (Wheat flour, Sugar, Vegetable oils [contains one or more of soybean oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, palm oil], Brown sugar syrup, Sodium bicarbonate [leavening], Soy flour, Salt, Cinnamon], Canola oil, Sugar, Soy Lecithin, Citric acid.

ingredient notes:
  • The cookie butter does contain sugar, and often, processed sugar is filtered with bone char. However, they’ve stated on their website that they do not contain any animal products. Since they state this, we’re assuming they’re using vegan-friendly sugar.

5. Biscoff cookie butter snack packs

The cookie butter snack packs are made of cookie butter and Biscoff ‘breadsticks’. Because they pretty much have the same ingredients as the cookie butter and the original cookie, they‘re vegan friendly as well.

snack pack ingredients

COOKIE BUTTER: Biscoff Cookies 58% (Wheat Flour, Sugar, Vegetable Oils [Contains one or more of Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil, Canola Oil, Palm Oil], Brown Sugar Syrup, Sodium Bicarbonate [Leavening], Soy Flour, Salt, Cinnamon), Canola Oil, Sugar, Soy Lecithin, Citric Acid. BREADSTICKS: Wheat Flour, Palm Oil, Salt, Barley Malt Extract, Malted Wheat Flour, Yeast.

BISCOFF PRODUCTS THAT AREN’T VEGAN

1. chocolate Biscoff cookies

The chocolate Lotus cookies ARE NOT vegan. They contain milk and butter oil in the real Belgian Chocolate.

chocolate cookie ingredients

Wheat Flour, Sugar, Real Belgian Chocolate (Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Cocoa Butter, Skimmed Milk Powder, Butter Oil, Emulsifier [Soy Lecithin and Polyglycerol Polyricinoleate]), Vegetable Oils (Contains one or more of Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil, Canola Oil, Palm Oil), Brown Sugar Syrup, Sodium Bicarbonate (Leavening), Soy Flour, Salt, Cinnamon.

2. lotus Biscoff milk chocolate sandwich cookies

The milk chocolate sandwich cookies ARE NOT vegan. As the name suggests they do have milk in the ingredients.

3. Biscoff ice cream

The Lotus ice creams ARE NOT vegan. They have tons of different flavors on their website, so I won’t go into every flavor since the base for all of them is the same. Below are the ingredients and a few notes about what’s in the ice cream base.

ice cream ingredients

Skim Milk, Cream, Biscoff Cookies (14%) (Wheat Flour, Sugar, Vegetable Oils [Contains one or more of Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil, Canola Oil, Palm Oil], Brown Sugar Syrup, Sodium Bicarbonate [Leavening], Soy Flour, Salt, Cinnamon), Sugar, Canola Oil, Glucose Syrup, Dried Skim Milk, Less than 2% of: Cocoa Butter, Whey Protein Concentrate, Mono and Diglycerides, Soy Lecithin, Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum, Citric Acid, Salt.

ingredient notes:
  • Their ice cream base contains Skim Milk, Dried Skim Milk, and Whey Protein Concentrate all of which are dairy products.

WHERE TO BUY BISCOFF COOKIES & SPREAD

So now that we know some Biscoff products are vegan, where can we buy them?

I’m usually able to find Biscoff cookie butter and the cookies at my local grocery store and Target in the aisle with nut butter and jams.

If you’re not able to find the Biscoff cookies in your grocery store, you can order them online. You can also order the Lotus Cookie Butter online. However, it’s more expensive than buying it in-store (about twice as much!).

If you’re not able to find the Lotus brand of cookie butter in stores, Trader Joe’s also sells delicious cookie butter that is very similar in flavor.
