This sweet and creamy oat milk matcha latte is the perfect morning boost or afternoon pick-me-up. It’s completely dairy-free and vegan, thanks to the oat milk. It can be made into an iced matcha latte for steamy summer days or a cozy hot matcha latte for chilly weather. Sweeten it with homemade brown sugar syrup or easy-to-find maple syrup or agave nectar.
Why you’ll love this oat milk matcha latte
- Super creamy but dairy free: thick, luscious oat milk is a great alternative to dairy and keeps this traditional latte vegan
- Customizable: sometimes local coffee shop matcha lattes can be just too sweet or watery for your taste. Add as much or as little ice or sweetener as you’d like to this delicious drink
- Iced or Hot: this recipe will show you how to make this matcha latte iced or hot so that you can drink it year-round
- Easy Recipe: only a couple of ingredients and minutes are needed to make it
What is Matcha?
Matcha lattes are a green tea latte with a vibrant green color.
Green tea leaves are ground into a fine powder and mixed with hot water. The traditional way or method of making matcha tea uses a bamboo whisk to make the matcha mixture.
Matcha lattes have less caffeine than a cup of coffee (but they still have caffeine) making them a good option to drink in the morning or in the early afternoon for a pick me up.
Ingredients
Only 3 ingredients are needed to make the base of this oat milk matcha latte. If you’d like an iced latte, you only need one more ingredient: normal or oat milk ice cubes!
- Ceremonial Grade Matcha: this is important for the best flavor. Matcha that isn’t ceremonial grade can be bitter
- Oat Milk: I recommend choosing an unsweetened, unflavored, ‘extra creamy’ oat milk for the best texture. I like Silk, Oatly, or Plant Oat’s Extra Creamy Oat Milk
- Sweetener of Choice: pick from homemade brown sugar syrup, maple syrup, or agave nectar to add some sweetness to the drink
Substitutions
- Sweetener: if you’re making a hot latte, feel free to add a granulated sweetener like sugar to the drink. It will dissolve easily into the hot oat milk. If making an iced oat milk latte, I recommend sticking to a liquid sweetener of your choice. You can find more sweetener options in this post.
- Milk: another dairy-free milk can be substituted for oat milk. I recommend using soy milk, cashew milk, or coconut milk (from a carton not a can), to get the creamiest texture. You could also use almond milk, but the latte won’t be as creamy.
Add-Ins
Other flavors can be added to this latte for unique pairings. Below are some fun ideas:
- Rose: rose petals or rose simple syrup can be added for a floral and bold flavor addition
- Vanilla Extract: a splash of vanilla adds some sweet flavor
- Brown Sugar Boba: for a fun treat, add boba at the bottom of your iced latte to make matcha bubble tea
- Strawberry Simple Syrup: to make this a strawberry matcha latte!
Ceremonial vs. Culinary Grade Matcha
There are different types of matcha powder, each varying in price. Usually, the most expensive type of matcha is ceremonial grade, but for a good reason. This high-quality matcha powder has the best taste.
Ceremonial grade is meant for drinking, as it tends to be less bitter.
Culinary grade matcha is slightly less expensive, but its flavor isn’t the same or as refined as the ceremonial grade.
Helpful Equipment
- Milk Frother: to whisk the matcha and froth the hot oat milk
- Matcha Whisk: this is optional to whisk the matcha. You can also use your milk frother
- Ice Cube Tray: for iced oat milk matcha lattes
- Glass Straw: for iced lattes
Step-by-step instructions
*Video tutorial is above the recipe card below!*
STEP 1: In a small cup or mason jar, add the matcha and hot water. Use the frother or bamboo matcha whisk to combine the two until there are no lumps of matcha.
STEP 2:
For a hot latte:
Microwave: Pour the oat milk into a microwave-safe mug. Microwave for 1 – 1.5 minutes. Keep an eye on the oat milk so it doesn’t boil over.
Stovetop: Pour the oat milk into a small saucepan and heat over medium-low heat. Bring to a simmer (but don’t let the milk boil), for 1 minute. Transfer to a mug when done.
STEP 3: Add the oat milk, sweetener of choice, and matcha to a mug. Whisk with the frother until the oat milk has formed small bubbles at the top.
To make the iced version:
STEP 4: Add the sweetener of choice to the bottom of a glass. Add as many ice cubes as you’d like, then pour on the oat milk.
TIP: For extra creaminess, use oat milk ice cubes. To make them, add oat milk to the ice cube tray and freeze for at least 3 hours.
STEP 5: Add the whisked matcha on top. Stir to combine and serve with a glass straw.
Tips and Tricks
- Use ceremonial grade matcha: for the best results and flavor, opt for this higher-quality matcha powder.
- Make sure there are no lumps: whisk the matcha powder with hot or warm water to help dissolve the powder and make sure there are no lumps.
- Pick an extra creamy oat milk: not all oat milks are created equal. Some oat milks have a reduced fat content, but for a creamy texture pick one that says either original oat milk or extra creamy on the carton.
- Use a liquid sweetener if making an iced oat milk matcha latte: liquid sweeteners dissolve faster and easier into iced drinks.
FAQ
While ceremonial grade matcha is the best, you can use culinary grade matcha. However, note that the flavor won’t be the same as what you’re used to from your favorite coffee shop.
Yes, you can absolutely use your milk of choice. I recommend using a milk with a slightly higher fat content for the creamiest texture most similar to whole milk. Other than oat milk, I recommend soy milk, cashew milk, or coconut milk.
