- Easy clean up: no grill, no mess. All you need to do is toss out the parchment paper.
- Crispy and charred on the outside, juicy on the inside: air frying is one of the best ways to make a juicy burger because it creates the perfect balance of textures

What are Beyond Burgers?
Beyond Burgers are plant based burgers that have a similar texture to meat burgers. Beyond Meat is made from pea protein and vegetable oils which means they’re gluten free, soy free, and they have a whopping 20 grams of protein per patty!
Most local grocery stores carry Beyond Meat now. Their products are typically in the section with traditional beef burgers and other meat products. Beyond Meat sells burgers and vegan ground meat, but they also sell vegan chicken now which I recently found at Costco!
I’m a huge fan of Beyond products since they’re so versatile. I’ve used them in tons of my recipes from Vegan Hot Pockets, to Vegan Meatloaf to Enchiladas.
Ingredients
To make these air fryer veggie burgers, you only need a few ingredients, most of which are pantry staples!
- Beyond Burgers, frozen or fresh
- Hamburger Buns Or Pretzel Buns
- Onion, red onion or white
- Lettuce, I like butter lettuce
- Tomatoes
- Pickles
- Vegan Gouda or Swiss Cheese, optional
- Vegan Mayo & Ketchup
Substitutions:
- Impossible Burgers: you can follow the same instructions to make Impossible burgers in the air fryer instead of Beyond Burgers. You could also sub in any frozen or fresh veggie burger.
- Brioche Burger Buns: for an extra decadent burger, use vegan brioche buns instead of normal hamburger buns.
Helpful Equipment
- Air Fryer or Air Fryer Toaster Oven
- Perforated Parchment Paper: this parchment is designed for air fryers and provides better air circulation. You can use normal parchment paper if that is all you have on hand.
Step-by-step instructions
*Video tutorial is above the recipe card below!*
STEP 1: Preheat the air fryer to 375F (190C).
STEP 2: Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper (for easy clean up).
📌 TIP: Always make sure that parchment paper is weighted down when using it in the air fryer. If it is loose, it can blow up into the burners and burn or catch on fire.
STEP 3: Transfer the beyond burger patties to the air fryer basket.
STEP 4:
- For Thawed Patties: Cook the burgers for 8 minutes, flipping them halfway.
- For Frozen Patties: Cook the burgers for 15-18 minutes, flipping them halfway.
📌 TIP: The burgers should be a light golden brown on the outside, but still slightly pink on the inside when done.
How to Add Vegan Cheese to the Air Fryer Burgers
STEP 5: After you flip the burgers halfway through cooking, add vegan cheese slices on top of the patties. Place the burgers back in the air fryer to finish cooking.
STEP 6: Assemble the burgers!

More Vegan Burger Toppings
Below are some of my favorite toppings for these yummy burgers.
- Vegan Bacon: add in store bought or homemade vegan bacon for some extra savory flavor and crispy texture
- Jalapeño or Sautéed Peppers
- Pickles: bread and butter pickles or spicy pickles
- Different Greens: spinach, kale, iceberg lettuce, arugula
- Different Vegan Cheeses: vegan cheddar or mozzarella
- Sauces: hot sauce, buffalo sauce, barbecue sauce, vegan ranch
Storage Tips
Beyond Burgers can be stored in the fridge or the freezer. I typically store mine in the freezer so they don’t spoil and to have some on hand whenever I need them.
They freeze wonderfully, however, I don’t recommend thawing them and then refreezing them multiple times, as the texture will change.
How long does a Beyond Burger last in the fridge?
- Unopened Package: 10 days
- Opened Package: 3 days when wrapped with plastic wrap
- Cooked Burger: 3 days in an airtight container
How long does a Beyond Burger last in the freezer?
- In the Freezer: uncooked, unopened Beyond Burgers can last 6+ months
Pro Tips for the Best Results
- Use Parchment Paper: a parchment liner helps make clean up easier and prevents the burgers from sticking to the air fryer basket.
- No need to use any extra cooking spray or vegetable oil: Beyond Burgers already have lots of oil in them.
- Thaw the burgers if possible: while the burgers can be cooked from frozen, it’s super easy to thaw them quickly in the microwave. They burgers cook more evenly when thawed first.
- Keep an eye on the burgers during the cooking process: each air fryer cooks differently, so keep an eye on the burgers towards the end of the cooking time to make sure they don’t overcook or to increase the cooking time by a few minutes if needed.
- Make sure the burgers are in a single layer: this makes sure they cook all the way through. I’m able to fit 2-3 burgers in my air fryer basket at a time.
Troubleshooting
▻ Do Beyond Burgers need to thaw before cooking them?
- Frozen burger patties can be cooked directly in the air fryer, however, it’s faster to thaw them in the microwave and then air fry them.
- Air frying frozen beyond burgers takes more than twice as long as cooking the thawed burgers.
▻ How to Defrost Beyond Burgers
If your microwave has a defrost setting you can select that and let it run for 1-2 minutes, flipping the burger halfway.
If your microwave doesn’t have a defrost setting, you can microwave the burgers on a plate in 30-second intervals for 1-2 minutes. Be sure to flip the burger after each interval.
Some liquid will seep out of the burger. This is okay! Use a paper towel to pat the plate dry.
▻ How to tell when the Beyond Burgers are Done
The burgers are done cooking when they are a light golden brown on the outside and still slightly pink on the inside. The internal temperature should be 165F (74C).
▻ Can I air fry other types of veggie burgers?
Yes, you can absolutely air fry other types of veggie burgers. Keep in mind that other burgers will have different cooking times based on how thick they are. If the burger is a similar thickness and size as a Beyond Burger, it should cook for a similar amount of time.
FAQ
If you want to cook a frozen hamburger, it will require a longer time in the air fryer to cook all the way through. Air fry the frozen Beyond Burgers for 16-18 minutes at 375F, flipping halfway.
You could add fresh cracked black pepper to the burgers, but the patties don’t require any additional salt. They have lots of seasoning inside of them, so they don’t require a ton of additional seasoning.
You can microwave the burgers on a plate in 30-second intervals for 1-2 minutes. Be sure to flip the burger after each interval.
