Why You’ll Love this Hazelnut Latte Recipe

I’m a huge coffee lover and when I buy coffee beans, I usually try to buy hazelnut flavored beans. This flavor has warm, nutty undertones that make each cup of coffee incredibly cozy. My goal with this latte is to get that same flavor but without using flavored beans! Also…if you love this Starbucks Copycat Hazelnut Shaken Espresso, you’ll love this latte.

Here’s are a few more reasons why we’re huge fans of this coffee and you will be too!

  • Bold Hazelnut Flavor: Hazelnut extract and/or homemade hazelnut simple syrup are mixed with the milk in this latte, giving it an intense hazelnut flavor.
  • Customizable: Feel free to add more milk, sugar or sweetener, or ice to your liking.
  • 4 Ingredients: With just a few simple ingredients and 2 minutes of your time, you can have a latte that rivals those found at your favorite coffee shop.
  • Dairy-Free: Use plant-based milk and creamer to make this recipe vegan and dairy free.

Ingredients

As I mentioned above, this recipe is pretty easy and it uses simple ingredients. Three of the four ingredients you probably already have in your pantry and fridge. The hazelnut extract is the only specialty item that will need to be purchased online or at a specialty grocer. I’ve linked the exact extract I use below. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Hazelnut Extract: No need for store-bought syrup; instead, we are using hazelnut extract and/or a homemade hazelnut syrup.
  • Sweetener of Choice: You can use maple syrup, agave nectar, or simple syrup.
  • Plant-based Milk: I used oat milk for this recipe.
  • Freshly Brewed Hot Espresso: A latte wouldn’t be complete without it!

Substitutions & Add-ins

  • Sweetener: You can use other homemade syrup recipes, like this brown sugar syrup, instead of maple syrup. I do have a homemade hazelnut coffee syrup! Or you can use cane sugar. If using a granulated sweetener, be sure to mix it in with the hot espresso before adding it to the latte. This way it will dissolve properly.
  • Milk: Feel free to use your favorite milk, such as almond milk, soy milk, or even hazelnut milk. I don’t recommend coconut milk as it has a strong flavor that competes with the hazelnut.
  • Vanilla Extract or Almond Extract: For more flavor, you can add in other extracts.

Helpful Equipment

  • Espresso Maker: Alternatively, you can use a French press to make your own cold brew for an iced latte.
  • Milk Frother: This is used to froth the milk for a hot latte.
  • Tall Serving Glass or Mug: For assembling and enjoying the latte!
  • Ice Cube Tray: For making regular ice or coffee ice cubes.

Step-by-Step Instructions

☕️ *Ingredient Quantities are in the Recipe Card Below!*

STEP 1: For a hot latte, heat the milk in a microwave or on the stovetop. Froth with a milk

STEP 2: Add the hazelnut extract and sweetener to taste to the milk. Mix or froth to combine.

STEP 3: Add the fresh brewed espresso to a mug or glass. Pour the milk on top and give the latte a stir.

STEP 4: For an iced hazelnut latte, add a handful of ice cubes to the glass. Taste and add more syrup if needed.

📌 TIP: Instead of espresso, brew bold coffee using your preferred method like a French press or traditional coffee maker. Allow it to cool slightly at room temperature, then refrigerate overnight or for at least 8 hours. The chilled coffee concentrate can be stored in the fridge for up to 1 week.

Serving & Storage

This hazelnut latte is so versatile and can be enjoyed for breakfast or as an afternoon treat. Here are a few of our favorite ideas to customize your latte:

Flavor Variations:

  • Chocolate Hazelnut Latte: Use chocolate syrup to turn this into a Nutella-inspired chocolate hazelnut latte.
  • Vanilla Hazelnut Latte: Add a splash of vanilla extract, vanilla syrup, or vanilla creamer for a sweet and aromatic twist.
  • Cinnamon Hazelnut Latte: Sprinkle ground cinnamon on top of your latte for a warm and spicy flavor.

Toppings:

  • Whipped Cream: Top your latte with a dollop of coconut whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.
  • Chocolate Shavings: Grate some dark chocolate over your latte for a decadent finish.
  • Cocoa Powder: Dust the top of your latte with unsweetened cocoa powder for a cozy mocha flavor.
  • Caramel Drizzle: Drizzle some caramel sauce over your latte for a sweet and buttery flavor.

Breakfast Pastries:

This latte is best served immediately for optimal taste. If you have any leftover hazelnut simple syrup, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Use the syrup to sweeten future lattes!

Helpful Tips For The BEST Hazelnut Latte

Mix Granulated Sweeteners into Hot Liquid: If using regular sugar to sweeten your latte, be sure to mix it into the hot coffee to dissolve the granules.

Sweeten to Taste: Everyone has different preferences when it comes to coffee. Be sure to adjust your latte to taste.

Add More or Less Milk to Taste: As with the note above, if you like your lattes creamier, add a splash or two more milk.
